About the Nebraska-Iowa Railroaders

The Nebraska-Iowa Railroaders group was founded in April 1971 and is a not-for-profit corporation formed under the laws of the State of Nebraska to further model railroading. We are an independent and diverse group, not associated with any national organizations. Many of our individual members do belong to various other train clubs and/or national groups. We currently have about 50 members variously involved in collecting and/or operating model trains covering all scales, types and vintages. Interests of many of our members also extend to railfanning, railroad history and railroadiana collecting.

Our main goals are to:

  • preserve the history of railroading,
  • educate future generations, and
  • promote any hobby connected with trains.

Members meet monthly to conduct club business, run trains, and discuss the latest train news and modeling techniques. Some of the members also meet informally every other week for lunch and more socializing. A Club newsletter titled “On the Rails” is published monthly. We maintain a small library of train books and videos.

A number of the Club members participate in operating a large O gauge hirail modular layout and a smaller, more “child friendly” portable layout at various train shows and events throughout the year. The Club also owns and maintains portions of a layout from Sel Suvalsky, a deceased member.

The Club sponsors at least one train show each year. This show takes place in the month of June. An annual dinner is held in January and a picnic in August. Monthly meetings are usually held at members’ homes. We are currently seeking a facility or space for storage of some of the Club’s property and/or to use as a layout work area.

Whether you are a model railroader or just like trains, you will enjoy being a member of the Nebraska-Iowa Railroaders.
